Phillip B. Messersmith, PhD
Professor Messersmith heads the Messersmith Research Group at UC Berkeley. The Messersmith research group is interested in understanding structure-processing- property relationships of materials in biological systems, and in using this information to inform the design, synthesis and application of biologically inspired synthetic materials used in a variety of practical applications. Current projects include molecular mechanochemical studies of biological wet adhesives, the design of biomimetic wet adhesive polymers and polymer composites, the control of biointerfacial phenomena in nanosystems and in antifouling surface coatings, and the development of novel biomaterials for regenerative medicine.
His research interests include studies of biological adhesives, biointerfacial strategies for surface modification, bioinspired polymers and polymer composites, and design of novel biomaterialsfor regenerative medicine.
Dr. Messersmith received his BS (Life Sciences) and PhD (Materials Science) degrees from University of Illinois at Urbana. Dr. Messersmith was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University from 1993-1994, a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1994-1997, and previous to Berkeley, had been at Northwestern University since 1997, where he was the Erastus O. Haven Professor. Messersmith is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering. Dr. Messersmith is a member of the editorial board of several journals and is Coeditor-in-Chief of the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Biomaterials Science.
William M. Johnston, Ph.D.
Dr. Johnston serves as Vice President of the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry and is a Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, currently serving part-time after thirty years of full-time service. At the College of Dentistry, he heads the Craniofacial Color Laboratory. Dr. Johnston previously served as a Program Specialist in the Biomaterials, Biomimetics and Tissue Engineering Branch of the Division of Extramural Research, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health, through an Intergovernmental Personnel Act Agreement with The Ohio State University.
Dr. Johnston’s research interests include color science, optical properties of natural and restorative esthetic dental materials, mathematical modeling, optimization of material compositions, and research designs and analyses. His special research interest focuses on the colorant formulation of maxillofacial prosthetic elastomers.
Dr. Johnston received his B.E.E. and M.S. degrees from Marquette University in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and served as Instructor in the College of Dentistry. He then completed his interdisciplinary Ph.D. studies at The University of Michigan, participating on the Dental Materials program of the College of Dentistry and the Material Science program of the College of Engineering.
Gary Musso, PhD
Dr. Musso is SafeWhite’s Chief Science Officer and the President and Founder of Musso and Associates LLC which provides strategic vision for development programs from inception/discovery phases through scale-up and commercialization in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. His strengths include the expertise to transform peptide- and protein-based science and technologies into clinically and commercially viable products that meet pharmaceutical quality requirements. Dr. Musso is an inventor on several patents and author of many successful regulatory filings and peer-reviewed publications.
He has 25+ years of experience in directing pharmaceutical research and development covering all aspects of chemistry, pharmaceutics, analytical sciences, drug delivery, regulatory, quality, compliance, and safety assessment, including major leadership roles in three approved commercial pharmaceutical products
Dr. Musso received his Ph.D., Bio-Organic Chemistry from the University of Chicago and his BA in Chemistry from New York University.
Dr. Victor J. Cook, Jr
Dr. Cook has been setting the highest standards of excellence in orthodontics for over 25 years. Dr. Cook’s practice is at the forefront of dental and orthodontic technology: he has incorporated original research into his practice to solve longstanding orthodontic problems and has several innovative patents on orthodontic instruments. He has helped to develop SafeWhite’s current application process, and continues to provide his technical and practical expertise in dental products to our science team.
Dr. Cook is an esteemed member of the orthodontic community, and has served as president of both the Ohio Association of Orthodontics and The Ohio State Orthodontic Alumni Foundation. He is also a member of many leading dental and orthodontic organizations as well as an active angel investor and inventor.
Dr. Cook earned his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University and his dental degree from the University of Buffalo. He then completed his specialty training in orthodontics, as well as earning a master’s degree in oral anatomy, graduating Summa Cum Laude from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
David William McComb is an Ohio Research Scholar and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University. He has extensive experience in the application of EELS to the study of problems in solid-state chemistry and materials science including structural and compositional variations in high-k oxides, short range magnetic order in transition metal oxides, interfaces in fuel cells, photovoltaics, multiferroics and biomaterials. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Materials, and until recently was co-director of the London Centre for Nanotechnology as well as Director of Research and Deputy Head of the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. In October 2011 he joined The Ohio State University as the founding director of the Center for Electron Microscopy and AnalysiS (CEMAS). This multidisciplinary facility will drive the application of state of the art electron microscopy techniques to strategic research challenges in the physical, engineering, life and medical sciences at OSU and beyond.
A chemistry graduate from the University of Glasgow, David did his PhD in Physics at the University of Cambridge. David is an expert in the development and application of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) as a sub-nanometre scale probe of chemistry, structure and bonding.
